I had to do the exact same thing a few months ago.

Try this:

http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk

I used dd to take a low-level copy of everything on the USB stick. I 
discovered that the first few KB had been filled with zeros, but after 
that there was still data. TestDisk was able to recover some of this 
data. Your USB stick may have failed in a different way; good luck!
