Being a University Professor doesn't guarantee that they can actually 
write coherently. :-)

The publishers I have dealt with didn't care what your skills were as a 
writer, going through an editorial review is a mandatory step.  I 
rejected 95% of the proposed changes from the editor because I do write 
that well <g>.  My co-author, on the other hand, has a PhD. in nuclear 
physics, but as I mentioned before, his first language is Chinese.  
Having an editor in his case was essential.
