One other thing to know is that different types of carbs digest at different 
speeds. There's a "glycemic index", where 100 is glucose (aka cane sugar), 
<100 digests slower, >100 digests faster. Obviously you want low numbers.

Some surprising thought-to-be-healthy foods actually will screw with your 
digestion as much or more than drinking a soda. Rice (at least white rice), 
carrots, and a few others are worse than a spoon of sugar. Fructose actually 
has a very low glycemic index, altho I don't know if the kind they use in 
manufacturing is better than regular sugar. But if you want something 
natural to scoop into your tea, fructose is much better for you that regular 
sugar and tastes the same, for example.
