When the media talks to gun owners, they always pick the extremists and
make them look normal.

The only information I could find with a quick google search was
http://blogostuff.blogspot.com/2004/12/percentage-of-adults-with-carry.html
listing the % of people with concealed carry permits in each state that
issues them. Given that New York and California do not generally issue
CCW permits, and weighting the other percentages by the state
population, I suspect the number of people who do carry concealed
weapons is much lower then it seems. (South Dakota population is listed
around 800,000, Virginia around 7.7 million, and Texas almost 24 million
people.) And just because someone has a concealed carry permit doesn't
mean they carry one all the time.

As for why they don't turn the situation into a movie scene, I think the
reason they get a CC permit explains that. If they wanted to carry a
weapon just to defend them self, without any regard for anyone around
them, they probably wouldn't get a permit to begin with. The people who
do have a permit aren't the Rambo types. Around here, there is the joke
that people with CC permits spend more time on the shooting range then
some of the local police (joke told by a friend who was getting a CC
permit, not by a cop).

Lastly, I've never heard anyone saying kids should carry guns to protect
them self. I've known kids who go hunting, and know how to carry a rifle
or shotgun safely, but even their parent's wouldn't suggest arming the
child just to get to school.
