That's the odd part, because it seems as though it literally opens a
random message every time for me. I could see if it opened the newest
or oldest unread message, but there were times when it picked one right
from the middle of the list. It truly boggles the mind. :)

I've skimmed through about:config but haven't really seen anything that
appeared to be related to it.
Maybe there's an extension that allows you to control that behavior; I
haven't looked yet.
