I actually found this to be one of the very few movies I've seen in 
which the time travel actually seemed to work in a coherent way (the 
other one I can think of is Primer).  Sure, it's by Terry Gilliam so 
it's a bit strange, but I think it's reasonably comprehensible, 
particularly as far as his movies are concerned.

I like this movie quite a bit, but I do agree that it doesn't go through 
many lengths to explicitly tell you what's going on.  I'd suggest 
reading the book first since it does a much better job of explaining 
things instead of just showing them.

You should see some of the *other* films by David Lynch!
