AFAIR, old versions of POV used to do the wrong thing (i.e. not
handle gamma at all). The assumed_gamma setting was added in order
not to break old scenes when POV became gamma-aware (from the docs:
"Scenes that do not have an assumed_gamma global setting will not
have any gamma correction performed on them, for compatibility
reasons.").
