If the majority of your use of the number is display, BCD makes sense.
(It's how phone numbers are encoded over X.25 and SS7 et al, also.)
The 6502 at least had a BCD math instruction.

That *is* BCD. "Packed BCD" is two BCD digits per octet. :-)
