Talking of Mg and Hg, At school, our teacher wanted to show us water
synthesis from H2 and O2 and the unstability of the gas mixture.
He filed a graduated lab glass tube with mercury and put it opening down in
a bath of mercury. then he filled it with the same volume of H2 and O2.
He told us to step back away then lit a ribbon of magnesium close to the
tube. The mix exploded projecting a thousand drops of mercury all across the
lab.
It looks like he forgot deepening the open end of the tube in the bath.
At this time mercury wasn't known as so contaminant.
