How about using sphere_sweeps with a reasonable number of points. Use the
v_turbulence and v_rotate macros, with a magnitude that start at almost zero and
slowly increase as you reach the tips, to place each succesive points. Place a
copy of those points in some arrays that you can read back to check for
intersections.
By using v_turbulence and restricting the range, you will minimize the
probability of neiboring tentacles to intersect each other, and elliminate the
risk of self-intersections.
I realise that this is somewhat advanced, and may be beter placed in the general
or advanced-users groups.
