Scattering in space...
Clearly this ship is damaged - the asymmetric backlight indicates a light 
source close to the hull, perhaps resulting from a damaged reactor or some 
such. I conclude that the vapour cloud is gas etc which has escaped from the 
ship. Otherwise this would be preposterous.
