Do you want the glow to illuminate other objects?

If not, a high ambient ought to do the trick. Bare in mind that, in
pov-land, things don't get any brighter than <1,1,1>, so to make a high
ambient stand out, you will need to make sure that the rest of your scene
has a generally lower light than that.

If you need the sword to illuminate other objects, then you will, afaik,
need to use radiosity... you could, as an alternative, try filling the sword
with emitting media, or scattering media with some lights embedded in it.
