Ok, here's my first post (and possibly the only one).

I've been fascinated by raytracing for many years, but mostly I've
simply admired the work of others and have created virtually none of
my own images. I definitely keep an eye on the IRTC site, and just
recently started perusing these povray newsgroups.

I originally started with version 1 of POVRay. I really didn't know
how to use it, and only created one image -- an isolated red sphere.
But with the non-square pixels of the video card I had at that time
(EGA), the aspect ratio was wrong and it was more like a red football
standing on end.

Later I got a book on raytracing which included version 2 of POVRay.
But all I ever did with this was render the book examples, I never
created anything of my own.

Now after a few more updates (currently 3.6 for Windows and Linux)
I've started playing with it a bit -- but still, I've never used more
than the basic primitives, CSG and the standard *.inc textures.

In any case, here is my version of the obligatory RSOCP (reflective-
sphere-on-checkered-plane). However, my sphere is only partially
reflective, instead it's semi-transparent and bumpy. This image
isn't intended to be realistic, just an early exercise in learning
the basic SDL syntax. It also has my first attempt at a colonnade-
style wall -- isolated and rather out-of-context, of course. BTW, I
don't know who knocked over the silver stand, the sphere it was
holding is rolling away to the right. ;-)

The second image is my nod to the programmers's standard "Hello World"
test/first program -- it's about the same (non)complexity. It uses an
image map made with PSP.
