Are you playing them full screen or in a window?
Depending on what screen mode your using, I think it takes some video
adapters a second or two to go full screen. I had a smilar issue recently
when planing with the media player on a second external monitor (projector).
The basted thign woudl change screen rez, which takes a half second or two.
The net result was my first frames were chopped.
Use irfan view maybe?
