I rather doubt that there were megabytes worth of changes in the
documentation for a release that only increments the last number in
the version string (in particular, the images, drawings and so on are
probably much the same and account for a lot of space). Since the
tools I refer to are able to keep only the differences for each file,
they should be able to get good results even though the documentation
is in a single file.
I can't find 3.6.0 anymore so I can't run the test myself, but it
might be interesting to at least give it a try rather than dismissing
the idea out of hand...

PS: btw, guess what's the biggest directory in the installation? I
know, it compresses extremely well and so it's not much to download,
but still I find it ironic...
