Cool... reminds me of a scene in Robert L. Forward's famous sci-fi novel
"Dragon's Egg", where the Cheela (a race of bizarre amoeba-like
intelligent creatures living on a neutron star) successfully test their
newly developed anti-gravity generator for the first time!
But the neutron star's surface didn't exactly look like the classical
checkered plane, it was brightly glowing in a yellowish white - while
the horizon is pretty much like on Dragon's Egg - a slightly glowing
thin vapour of hyper-compressed iron atoms extending just a few
centimetres upward from the surface.
