Wow! This looks similar to the effect I used in my SSS demo I made a little 
earlier. You're tempting me to go back and use a texture (density) like the 
one you used! Excellent work. (Background's a little plain, though...)

And yes, scattering media does cast shadows. That's how I give shadows to 
my clouds over broad landscapes. :-)
