Commercial software companies are unlikely to fear the competition of free
3D software at this stage (POV-Ray, Blender and a gazillions renderers and
modellers). Why would they care : there's no open source Maya clone right
now. The problem magazines can have with 3D freeware is more simply that
they have no good reason to dedicate valuable commercial space to them.

I only ask for a free copy and a credit + link (which I get). Ten of
thousands of starving graphic artists would kill mom and dad for this kind
of publicity. It would take a couple of emails to replace me. I remember a
movie magazine complaining that a A-list movie star had *** dared *** to ask
for compensation, so it's not like a nobody like me is going to get
something else that free advertising (and being a hobbyist, it's not like I
care about it anyway).
Of course, I could be all wrong, but the feeling I have with any
talent-based industry is that talents are rarely in a good negotiating
position...
