Manufacturing the pieces would be a problem as the only material I know 
with a high enough ior is gallium phosphide, and the design doesn't have 
quite the same impact if the spheres are made even of diamond or cubic 
zirconia with an ior around 2.2 , see the attached rendering. Perhaps 
with some redesign of the internals for a lower ior.
