Thanks for your answer. This seems to be close to POVs equation. But the 
first part probably should be 
 l*(1-t-f)
because the scene
 plane{z,0.1 pigment{rgbft <1,1,1,k,k>} finish{ambient 1 diffuse 0}}

gives a complete black image for k>=0.5 and a gray for k=0.25
