IMAX theatres usually use LCS (liquid crystal shutter) glasses, not passive
polarization as Remco Poelstra describes on his web site. Passive
polarization
for projection has been in wide spread use since the late 1930's when
Edwin Land developed a cost efficient method of making polarizing filters.
Hence the name "Polaroid" for his company which today makes instant
cameras and film.

Stereoscopic slides were very popular in the early 1950's. I have two
3D projectors from the era that I often use for 3D slide shows. I've
been using POV-Ray to make stereo images and have been putting
them on slides for 3D projection since 1994.
