You should not be using emitting media unless it has some reason for
emitting its own light (as in the case of, say, fire). If you're shining
a light through it and you want the light to be visible (as you
indicated in your post), use scattering media.
If you're using MegaPOV or POV 3.5 (and you should be), check the media
documentation for how to set up your media properly.
