You could try TMPEnc (MPG encoder).  Free, and getting better all the time:

Virtual Dub is a very nice AVI encoder with lots of filters - you can add
watermarks to your anims, and (with a bit of work) even add subtitles!  You
can even set it up to 'stream' frames to TMPGEnc so that you can encode your
animation as an MPG (with your filters intact) without having to turn it
into an AVI first:
