Well, there's the GLOBE project (GLobal One-km Baseline Elevation).  I can't
recall the exact url, but it's off of the US's National Oceanographic and
Atmospheric Agency (NOAA) web pages.

They have previews as jpg's of 45deg/45deg sections at 30' resolution, or a
form you can fill out to request 1' resolution datasets of specific regions.

(Err, the ' character represents minutes of lat/long, not feet)

The custom data sets are in an ugly format though, and will require processing
before povray could work with them.  An explanation of the format is provided
with the data.
