  It was me who studied and discussed this problem in my report about wrong
smooth heighfield lighting (inversion of normals problem). I also posted a
summary of my findings as a followup to this thread.

  As I mentioned, it's most probably something that will be most easily fixed
with a full rewrite of the rendering engine in pov4. Fixing it in pov3.x would
be just a dirty hack and lot of work. (Of course this is only my opinion based
on studying the source code; I'm not a developer, so I can't speak for sure.)
