I almost questioned that too but then figured it to be about things still
being y-aligned, such as with spherical image map.  For example, put marble
and radial patterns into a blend map of a spherical pattern and it would be
along y axis still, even though going from center to outer edge.  In other
words, everything isn't rolled around to any other axis.
But yeah, I'd say it makes little sense to state it the way it is.  Possibly
very little.
