Well you don't pay me anything, It's not my contest, I'm just a
volunteer image judge. To give you some background, there is a
whole long standing tradition of photography competitions. They
have always had an entry fee. In a traditional photo competition
the entry fee would go toward paying for the return postage on
the photographs and paying for the rental of a hall to hold the
judging and showing of the slides/prints. I suppose the Cascade
Stereoscopic Club figured they needed some fee to cover costs,
even if it is only some printing and the cost of ribbons and medals,
but you'd have to ask them. I don't know. I had thoughts similar
to yours... why a fee if the materials are all electronic and hence
no postage?

I'm thinking of having the Oakland Camera Club do a similar
competition but without a fee. That would be because the club
gets it's web space and e-mail from me and I don't ask the club
to pay any part of the $220 a year that I spend to maintain the
web space and e-mail :-) then the club would just have to pick
up some printing and the cost of medals.
