http://film.gimp.org/gimp.pdf says
"GEGL abstracts the color model and color depth (8-bit, 16-bit,
float)..." and "[GIL] has been implemented for the case of ... and data
types (float, 8bit, 16bit)"
More relevant is:
"The film version of GIMP supports both 16-bit and floating point
channel data"
