The checker pattern gives:

ABABABAB
BABABABA
ABABABAB
BABABABA

But what is the best way to obtain

ABCABCABCABC
BCABCABCABCA
CABCABCABCAB
ABCABCABCABC
BCABCABCABCA

and other  general checker patterns? Must these be done "by hand" using
loops?
