I tried the same technique i used for the earth some time ago, see:
Subject: rendering the earth (71k+68k)

From: Christoph Hormann <chr### [at] gmx de>
Newsgroups: povray.binaries.images
for rendering the Mars surface. The topography data is from:
http://wufs.wustl.edu/missions/mgs/mola/megdr.html
and the coloring uses a much lower resolution image.
The first image shows the whole planet, rendered in various tiles like
before. The second image shows a closeup view of Valles Marineris.
