This is all due to the default color_map. Bozo gets one with sharp
borders while wood has a smooth brown color_map by default. This has been
standard for a long time, just have a look at the 3.1 source. I think it
has already been considered changing this to a default grey gradient for
all patters, but this would discontinue old standards.
And i think you are right, the default color maps are not documented.
