That's 'cuz they used 25x vertical exaggeration for the long shots
and 5x for the closeups.  Earth would look funky if you did that,
too.

BTW, I myself thought of making a 3D model of Mars when I first
saw the MOLA images a few months ago, but encountered a problem
when I realised that POV doesn't do spherical heightfields.

Doh!

Though I could try bump map, see how that works...
