I have been trying to create realistic jewels and gold, and here is a
sample of what I have achieved this far. I have tried to make the gold
look ancient, like those pieces of jewelry dug from graves. I am quite
satisfied with the gold but the diamond is not yet what I wanted it to
be. It was better rendered with MegaPov and a bunch of lights, but
changing to POV 3.5 and restrictions set by the rest of the scene made
it look worse.
The gold texture uses the technique discussed earlier in this group: it
has multiple texture layers to make it possible to have highlights of
different color than the other parts of the scene. The diamond just
combines ior, interior, photons, variable reflection and multiple
highlights.
Needles to say that it took several days to render on my Celeron 400.
The gold texture is originally based on iron texture made by JRG,
altought it has been altered so much since, that indentation seems to be
the part that reminds me most about the original one. Radiosity settings
used are originally based on ones posted by Gilles. Thanks to these guys
for sharing their know-how.
