Hi experts!

I don't want to start an opinion war here but can somebody tell me what
free and LEGAL compression codecs are best to use to create animations.
I need to distribute my animations and therefore the codec needs to be
easily accessable. All I basically need is something  for grayscale
animations without sound that'll playback on PC.

Sure hope somebody can give me some advice.
