Have you looked Christoph Hormann's tutorials?

Some sort of light fading is one thing to add (either with fade_distance &
fade_colour or media). Another is variable reflection, in combination with
conserve_energy, which makes the water more reflective & less transparent at
shallow angles (I am of course assuming you use MegaPOV)
