which can and can't be overwritten.  i'm thinking it would be nice if we
could 'add' global settings rather than overwrite them.  say for
example, an include file needs a setting that i don't usually use in my
global settings.  that include file should be able to add it to the mix
overwriting that one but without deleting the rest.
