i haven't done this yet, but i had an idea about candle or torch flames
a while back. blobs are made of spheres and cylinders. the cylinders
don't have to have the same diameter at each end, i.e. you can make it a
cone. i'm thinking that if a blob of a cone placed above a sphere were
made, then in animation:
1) the sphere is scaled slightly in the three directions,
2) while at the same time the base of the cylinder dances around inside
the sphere by means of slight translations in all directions, the top of
the cone always above it,
3) the strength of the blob interaction is fluctuated to give variety to
the size and shape of the flame,
4) the size of the cone's top radius is varied, to give a point
sometimes and soft tops other times,
5) the media inside changes scale in order to have the flame dissipate
at the edge of the blob at all times.

i don't recall which media type is the slowest (scattering, emmitting,
or the other), but a light source inside the flame that also dances with
the cone might work well with it. i'm currently in the middle of two
other projects right now, and want to finish them first, otherwise i'd
try this out myself. which ever method you choose, good luck.
