I found that I had to use a much higher negative value and ambient 0  to get
the effect I wanted.
pigment { rgbf < 0.5, 0.5, 0.5, -5.0 > }

...doesn't make sense to me(if it was going to work,-1 should have done it),
but since it works I will use it. Thanks to all.
