Unfortunately, I didn't get as far this weekend as I would have
liked.  I did add two new patches (Jon Cruz' TTF patch and Mike Paul's
metallic reflection patch) and I got an email yesterday from Hans 
Detlev-Fink with some more changes, for *nix compatibility and a 
change in the slope-dependent texture parser, but I hope to have
something online within the next day or so.  I do have a working
Windows binary, so it won't be too much longer now.

In other news, I'm thinking about soliciting contributions for a 
new splash screen.  If you have an image that you think would work,
I'd love to see it.  Here are the requirements:

o The image must be smaller than 640x480 by a good margin.  The 
  current image is 512x384, which seems like a good size.  
  Practically speaking, image size isn't a problem unless there 
  are details that disappear or moire patterns that appear at 
  this resolution, because I will likely rerender the image anyway.

o The image must contain the copyright and version information 
  corresponding to the version of the superpatch for which it is
  used.  For this reason, your best bet is to leave a nice flat
  (low-contrast, low spatial frequency) space for about 5-6 lines 
  of text somewhere on the image, or include six lines of nonsense 
  text similar to the four that are in the current image.  I'll 
  add the info later, if necessary.  There should also be room for 
  the word "SUPERPATCH" somewhere on the image, if it's not already 
  a fairly obvious part of the image.

o The image must use at least one feature of the superpatch.  The
  current splash screen, for which source was included in the 
  current distribution, uses three superpatch features.

o You must provide the source for the image, including any image
  maps necessary to reproduce it.  The source for the winning image 
  will be included with the next distribution of the superpatch.
  For this reason, size matters: the smaller your source is, the
  better.  Practically speaking, this means image maps should only 
  be used as a last resort.  I might also include the source for
  runner-up images with the next distribution, at my discretion.
  This means you should either own the copyright for everything
  you use or have permission to use it, just like the IRTC.  Give
  credit where it's due.

o You need not put your work in the public domain, but it would be
  really nice if I didn't have to write the additional license 
  requirements.  So, put your license terms at the top of each
  source file, even if the source is to be public domain.  By 
  entering, you consent to having your source code and your image 
  published with one or more future versions of the superpatch,
  whether or not it was adjudged to be the best entry.  In addition, 
  you consent to my making minor modifications to your source, 
  including but not limited to adding or changing the text elements.  
  Make sure you make these exceptions in your license terms if 
  necessary.

o "Stealing" elements from the current splash screen is perfectly
  legal.  Some people even actually like the current one, but I've
  grown bored with it.

o You don't win anything except the dubious honor of having your
  image included in the next superpatch.  Oh, okay, I'll throw in 
  a free copy of the superpatch.

If you'd like to enter, send either your image (512x384 or smaller
JPEG, please) or your source code by email to par### [at] fwicom.  
Make sure to mention in the body of your email that this is a 
submission for the splash screen competition.
