Well, the main thing is: respect other people... you can
only offend someone when you say something offending, so...
I don't know of any source that jotted all the 'rules' down.
You might want to try searching in Altavista (or another
search engine) under netiquette.

Let's see if I can give you a good definition...
Spam is junk. You know the messages that get posted in
newsgroups that say "make money without risk" or "get your
driver's license for free"? Well, that's spam (unless one
visits a newsgroup called here.you.can.advertise.com).
Unwanted messages... unrelated... irritating stuff.

Well, I'm sure someone else will be able to give you a more
to-the-point description of the phenomenon...
