X is the most commonly used windowing system on UN*X systems,
providing a graphical user interface. I think it's actually a
server-client protocol. It's possible to run a program on one machine
and have the display on another machine anywhere in the world, providing
they are connected.
Motif is a toolkit that programmers can use to create buttons, pop-up
menus and a lot of other thing. I guess it is something like MFC for
windows.
Hope this clears things up a bit.
