Let me ask this question differently... has anyone been able to get the
animation options to work with POV-Ray running under Vista? I don't want
to waste my time trying to fix a problem that can't be fixed.
I let me work PC (which still has XP) render overnight and I made this:

My home PC should be much faster but it has Vista and I currently can't get
it to use any of the animation options.
Thanks,
Carl

Hi Carl,
I just got POV-Ray 3.61c to do animations under Vista (Home Premium here).
Here's what I did, hope it works for you also:
Go to the directory where PORay was installed, enter the "bin" subdirectory,
right click on "pvengine.exe" and choose "Properties".
Under the "Compatibility" tab, mark the checkbox for "Disable visual
themes",
then click teh OK button.
That did the trick for me.

THANK YOU!!!! I have POV-Ray 3.6.1c and I've got Vista Ultimate. Before I
saw your post I uninstalled POV-Ray and reinstalled it again. This time I
installed it to:
C:UsersCarlPOV-Ray for Windows v3.6
(There are a couple back slashes in there that I don't expect to show up
when thos post goes through... not sure why.)
I can now edit and save the ini file without having to run notepad as an
administrator. However I still couldn't use any of the animation options
without POV-Ray just coming back and saying (Not Responding). I had ran
POV-Ray as an adminstrator and I changed the compatability tab to windows xp
sp2. Neither had any effect. If I tried both together I never got the (Not
Responding) message but it did hang up. I then unselected the windows xp
sp2 compatability option and tried your "Disable visual themes" option and
it WORKED!!! Nothing even had to be ran as an administrator. I don't have
a clue why that worked but it did and I'm happy.
Is this a bug I should report?
Thank you again,
Carl

Hi Carl,
Good to know that it worked for you too!
I had also tried, previously, to run pvengine.exe in compatibility
with XP SP2 and it failed to do animations.
I wouldn't say it is a bug in POV-Ray, better call it an incompatibility
with Vista's new themes features. Anyway, it is something the developers
(great guys, aren't they?) should know about.
Regarding the missing backslahes, guess that doubling them will
work (seems it looks like the C language, in which a backslash introduces
an escape sequence).
Let's try:
C:\\Program Files\\POV-Ray for Windows v3.6\\bin\\pvengine.exe
http:\\\\www.povray.org (I typed 4 backslashes here)
OK! So, to get this \\ you have to type this \\\\
Regards
Eudy

Hmm, seems the backslash stuff only applies if you're using the web
interface of the newsgroups.
If using a mail/news client, just type normally. No need to double type the
backslash.

I do not have Vista and I do not want to migrate to it in the near future.
So I can't help directly. However, why don't install Povray into another
folder? Create a folder such as "c:program files2" or whatever and install
to there. As far as I know Vista guards only the folders c:windows and
c:program files.

Hi Carl,
I have found the same problem in my vista system. Vista by default protects
everything in the program files folder from being changed. The solution is
to copy the .ini file out of the program files directory, save it and copy
it back. It will ask permission to copy the file but after then it should
work fine.
Richard.

Good idea to watch out of an even dumber behavior. I recently installed
Neverwinter II. It saves game data, like saves, in .DAT files **in your
user profile areas**. Not a big deal, except that Windows "cleanup"
feature for recovering space sees .dat, leaps to the conclusion its some
sort of temp file for an installer, and wipes all your save files out of
existence. A problem that would have never come up, if I had a)
remembered to change the location where those files get saved to the
"larger" partition, or b) had the fracking option to tell Windows when I
installed it, to put them there in the first place. I mean, what nimrod,
other than Windows developers, puts *user data* in the same fracking
partition as the main OS, boot loader and every other component that you
need to upgrade regularly, may need to be reinstalled, and is most
likely to get infected, deleted, mangled or just filled up, until your
don't have any space left to put anything any more?

I had the same problem with not being able to edit .INI files. I just logged on
as admin then right clicked on the .INI went to property and then security.
Then noticed that for my user account (even though listed as an admin)did not
have all permissions set. So i turned them all on and then hit apply, this then
let me edit any INIs
