Would it be hard to put something like this into PovRay?
This would maybe just be a toy for the most people, but a nice one ;)

It has already been done before, albeit with older versions of POV-Ray; 
see e.g. 
http://www.phy.syr.edu/courses/PHY312.03Spring/mcdonald/phy312/povray22x.zip 
(modified POV-Ray 2.2). A modified version of POV-Ray 3.5 also exists 
(or at least existed), but I can't find it on the net right now.

I know it's an old thread, but just a quick comment. I think that with the mesh
camera, this is possible without modification of code (just with a macro or
something). Only the redshift/blueshift is a problem, but that can be done with
an appropriate 2D post-processing stage.
