Otherwise, ...

you'd think so, but if you visit website A and they have these "like"/"share"
buttons for (un)social media on the page, your browser etc details will be
forwarded to those "service" providers -- even in cases where you do not have an
account with any of the companies involved.

Try Quant search engine with Brave browser. Word has it that Firefox/Mozilla is
selling people out, and Brave is the next increment forward on that front.

I've had to ditch chrome, opera and firefox....
I think icecat might still be ok, as well as numerous other 3rd party browsers.

Good work locking down your system and monitoring the ins and outs. :)

I am probably naive :-) but I never (repeat "never") indulge in
like/dislike questions and such... I am not interested in those
sites/questions.

I can recommend Startpage.com on firefox which, according to the leading
consummer organisation/journal here in NL, is superior in privacy
protection while at the same time using google for searches. It is Dutch
too ;-)

Well, as far as I am able and aware of course ;-) I never had to
complain though.

the point is that you do not have to "indulge", it is all taken care of, for
your .. convenience, of course.

say you go on to the BBC's news web site. scenario: you open a new tab in your
browser and type in the url, and as soon as the home page appears, you close the
tab. your "visit" has now been registered (incl browser details + ip address)
with Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram (links at bottom left of page). no
clicking needed, the stakeholders know there's no point in relying on the user.

And through the unread all-encompassing EULA.

This is of course just the very tip of the iceberg.
Look at what China is doing with facial recognition and "social credit".

It's not just any one single thing. It's the totality of the data collection
and correlation and cross-referencing, and machine learning and
interpolation.....
The sheer scale and scope and speed of which people could have hardly ever
imagined, and still have no idea the extent to which what has already been
collected can be applied to.

1984 was supposed to be a warning, not an instruction manual.

I fully agree of course with that. In practice however, that would mean
that you could not do anything nor go anywhere if you wanted to browse
anonymously (Oh yes! there is VPN!); My philosophy is therefore: to hell
and I don't care (within respectable limits) as long as I can protect
myself from any targeted ads and such, which I have been able to do
until now for the last thirty five years or so. It is a pain in the
proverbial a****, but I feel more concerns about what is happening in
the world at large at the hands of the ubiquitous fools (granted, also
marginally pushed by the 1984 developments you so rightly mention).

To return to the original topic:
The problems Mike mentioned made me think of those felt by severe
migraine or epileptic patients (believe me, I know what I am talking
about from my immediate surroundings unfortunately). The solution is
therefore to use plain, discrete colours as screen backgrounds instead
of images/photos. I am not convinced about win10 itself being at the
source of the complaints; or Mike means something else of course...

More recent versions of VMware (and I think Virtual Box) can handle
accelerated video (including 3D support) pretty well with a supported
host OS driver.

Check the refresh rate on the video hardware. I've known people for whom
the refresh rate could trigger feelings of nausea.

Update: after nearly two months I have gotten used to it and it no
longer bothers me.

I also bought a nice IPS monitor in the meantime.
