Also, I had to buy a new thumbdrive just for this installation, too,
since the ISO was too big to fit on a DVD.

I did not have driver issues with the thumbdrive however.

What did you use to burn the stick? My understanding is burning from
Linux is my problem; I need to burn it from Windows. Supposedly.
(which makes absolutely no sense to me, but whatever)

I think I used a program called Rufus. (Before that I tried something
different that didn't work correctly, IIRC.)

I bought some programs from Stardock called Start10 and WindowBlinds.
They helped a little, but they can only go so deep into the OS.

Also, tilting the monitor downward helped a little. Tomorrow I will get
out my wrench and lower it an inch or so. (It is attached to a set of arms.)

Lastly, I odered an IPS monitor which may help prevent the screen from
'fading' at oblique angles.

I guess that the best way is to try to get the OS settings right for
your personal situation. Out of the box, the settings are a bit crude.
Somehow, I do not like very much the HDR aspect of the screen images
presented: colours are too 'violent' or 'contrasted' imo.

That might certainly help.

I use Win10 on a laptop, so no external screen. I am in the process of
gradually migrating my stuff from the Win7 PC to this new machine. I
still have some adjustments to do where the screen output is concerned.

I found Rufus to be helpful when burning sticks - looks like sometimes I've used
MagicIso and VirtualCloneDrive and ... IsoProx(?)

But I got the strong whiff of bad things with the pathologically overzealous
push to Win10, and that just got me to start seriously exploring options for
software, services, and operating systems that don't charge me money to "update"
my system, lock me out when I don't pay (rent), spy on me, steal and sell my
data to 3rd parties, and use their ill gotten gains to make the world a more
miserable place.

So, no M$, Facebook, instagram, twitter, amazon, google, I try to use video
services other than YT, etc.

If simply installing an OS can make you physically ill, then I'd delete it and
never look back. I'm guessing that a monitor issue may just be the tip of the
iceberg.

Caveat emptor
Mice only fall for the trap because they don't understand why the proffered
goodies that they desire are "free".

Amen.

I do not share completely your dark view. It is a user's choice to share
his/her (private) life with the world at large. Otherwise, one is fairly
safe imho. Of all the services you mention, I do not use any one except
Microsoft as my OS, and Google through the filter of Startpage on
Firefox (plus the necessary addons for privacy), not to mention a high
end virus/malware checker or two. I can assure you that not much is
going out from here (or going in for that matter) without my knowing it.

However, a calculated risk is part of life. When I go out on my bicycle
or my car, I am at the mercy of whatever my happen without my will or
knowledge. ;-)

Otherwise, ...

you'd think so, but if you visit website A and they have these "like"/"share"
buttons for (un)social media on the page, your browser etc details will be
forwarded to those "service" providers -- even in cases where you do not have an
account with any of the companies involved.

"Studies have shown that people's right to the belief in privacy..."
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Privacy_concerns_with_social_networking_services#Privacy_concerns

anyway.

Try Quant search engine with Brave browser. Word has it that Firefox/Mozilla is
selling people out, and Brave is the next increment forward on that front.

I've had to ditch chrome, opera and firefox....
I think icecat might still be ok, as well as numerous other 3rd party browsers.

Good work locking down your system and monitoring the ins and outs. :)

I am probably naive :-) but I never (repeat "never") indulge in
like/dislike questions and such... I am not interested in those
sites/questions.

I can recommend Startpage.com on firefox which, according to the leading
consummer organisation/journal here in NL, is superior in privacy
protection while at the same time using google for searches. It is Dutch
too ;-)

Well, as far as I am able and aware of course ;-) I never had to
complain though.
