After seeing Chris Huff's bucket photons i tried some tests for using
photons on large water surfaces in outdoor scenes.
Using large objects with photons turned out to be quite slow and therefore
i tried to split up the water surface into parts where photons are
calculated and where not.
See the results attached, the calculation times are:
#1:
photons: 2:06
total: 11:46
#2:
photons: 8:57
total: 22:54
#3:
photons: 1:54
total: 13:44
#4 (higher quality):
photons: 5:23
total: 21:59
This splitting up works quite well, but i wonder if it would be useful to
include support for automatizing this in povray. For example one could
specify an object and only inside this object photons are calculated.

How about using photons in combination with projected_through and
lightgroups. Never tried it though and can't try now with a 24+h one
rendering.

That sounds feasible, but creating a right 'projecting object' is probably
not that easy in most cases. Furthermore as i understand things it would
be visible in the scene, because you can't create 'only photons' light
sources (maybe that would be a useful addition too).

I'm not sure what settings you mean, all I did was turn them on and
specify a spacing...

Exactly this, i never took the time to find out how actually you set up
photons correctly so i just copied your photon{} blocks and played a bit
with the spacing.
