We did recently fix a - sometimes significant - 'compiler' related 
degrade with AA mode 2 (+am2) where the windows compiler was OK, but gnu 
g++ and clang were slow. See: https://github.com/POV-Ray/povray/pull/270 
merged April 12, 2017.

Though we saw nothing like a 10x difference.
