OK, I guess what I was really asking is why it's still considered the 
most powerful editor *today*.

I can see how it does several things which would have been very 
remarkable at one time. It appears to have practically *invented* 
interactive editing, syntax highlighting, multiple document interfaces, 
incrimental searching... all years before anything else did it.

But, given that these are all ubiquitous features *today*, is Emacs 
still relevant?
