no matter what i do, all i see is:
Cannot open INI file 'C:'.
i've even added the default POVRAY.INI as an environment variable.

What is the full name and path of the ini fle you try to select? Here, with 
your example, it looks like a pointer file point just to "C:\", but not to a 
file, let's say, "C:\Programme\POV-Ray for Windows\Ini\Quickres.ini" (or any 
other file).
