Did you test out the OpenGL POV-Ray patch? I had the same problem even
after removing it from my system. I had to uninstall the Offical POV-Ray
and reinstall it to solve the issue.

No patches of any kind have been installed/applied for POV in my case.

Try uninstall/reinstall anyway. It only takes a few minutes.

I wonder if it's trying to access the net without succeeding (ping
timout?).
Did you allow POV-Ray to access the net when you installed it (it was
one of the questions in the installation dialog).

I don't remember now, but I doubt it's net activity that keeps the HD
scratching for so long.

I will uninstall/reinstall when I have enough nerve to run through all the
settings again for setting it up.

It does nothing that takes so long. It is something on your system. I
don't think there is anybody who can help you fix your setup without access
to it.

Loads content and images for Insert menu? IIRC POV-Ray rereads them every time
Windowses send message that something was changed in Insert Menu folder. For
example making http://www.abx.art.pl/pov/bonus I found that introducing large
changes in Insert Menu folder and having POV-Ray run at the same time slows
down switching to POV-Ray a lot.

switch of your virus monitor / scanner, at least that what causes the
startup delay on my machine. You also wan't to switch virusscanners of
when generating / parsing large mesh and when using radiosity and photons.

I think I'll try uninstalling and see what happens. Thanks.

My problem was with an early version. I have not tested the latest
releases.
